What to wear in your Engagement Session

A step by step guide to answer all of your style related questions in regard to your upcoming engagement session.

1. Color
A few things to consider when you are choose the colors for your outfit(s).  You'll have to consider the overall vibe of the images you want.  If you want more vibrant and playful images then choose colors that are brighter.  If you like more classic and subtle images you'll want to pick more neutral and harmonizing tones.  Also
consider what season your having your session, fall warm tones, spring pastels tones, winter cooler tones, and summer bright tones.  Location can also play into which colors to choose.  Think about the color of the buildings, trees, landscape, and other surroundings.

2. Comfort/Confidence
Every couple unless you are both professional models will start off feeling a little awkward in front the camera.  Not to worry that I'm here!  You will want to pick clothes that both fit you well and you feel good wearing.  If you are comfortable and confident in what you are wearing you be able to focus on posing and working that model face.

3. Avoid Busy Patterns/Stripes
Picking timeless classic pieces with clean lines will help keep your images from ageing poorly.  Everyone loves mom and dad in the 1970s floral patterned dresses and ruffle tuxes, or 1980s wedding dresses with the endless amounts of beads and ruffles but it is every easy to pick out the time period when those images were taken.

Avoid picking out exact matching patterns, colors, or items.  Instead pick out complimentary colors.  If you do want to want exactly try doing something like this:  wearing a dress with floral pattern, pick out one of the colors and have your partner wear that color.  If you feel strongly about one color then pick them as a running theme thru out the images and not as the main focal point.

5. Bring Two Outfits
In my opinion it's always a good idea to bring two outfits and change half way through your session.  I love the idea of starting your session off in a formal outfit then switching to a more casual one.  Bonus points for flowy dresses that allow for the wind to catch and add movement to your pictures.  Don't be afraid to accessorize with a fun hat, jewelry, a scarf, or even a pair of shoes that Carrie Bradshaw herself would swoon for!
